• Soil rakes can be used for a variety of tasks in the school garden. They are particularly useful in preparing and maintaining soil conditions to promote plant growth and for levelling uneven ground. Soil rakes can be used to gather and remove items like twigs, leaves and stones from the soil and to prepare an even surface for sowing seeds.

• To teach a child how to use a soil rake safely, demonstrate that they should hold it properly, keeping it pointed to the ground in order to keep tines away from other children’s faces.
