Items of authentic historical clothing can provide relatable compare and contrast activities that strengthen understanding at KS2.

• The Romans arrived in Britain wearing the caligae (military sandal) which exposed the toes, had a lattice, front lacing and a heavily nailed sole. Soldiers wore them for marching, working and standing for long periods of time.

• Before letting your pupils know who wore these shoes in Roman times, why not use their historical enquiry skills to see if they can find the answer for themselves?
