Periscope Class Kit

A cross-curricular STEM kit for 60 pupils to each make their own periscope and discover how it works.

  • Children will investigate the way light behaves as it reflects down the periscope and then into their eye, and identify how each of the materials is used for a particular purpose.

  • Pupils will use a protractor to mark out angles of 45°, cut slots for the mirrors and assemble the card box. They will measure and cut mirrors, attach them to a mountboard support, fit them into the slots and then decorate their periscope.

  • Created by mechanical engineer Caroline Alliston. Supporting literature includes a lesson plan, PowerPoint, pupil worksheet and ‘how to’ blog.

    Overview

    • 60 pre-shaped card boxes
    • 1 pack mountboard
    • 10 A4 plastic mirrors
